When you slow the heck down to focus on yourself – not the mom version of you, or wife version, or friend, overworked or chauffeur version but the YOU-est version of yourself, are you getting everything you need? A few months ago I slowed down, practically stopped every busy thought, muted the mental to-do lists, escaped the routine of operating at peek stress levels and asked myself if I was prioritizing my needs as well as I need. The obvious answer is no, the problem is that living that way has become so normalized in our culture. There’s so much self care talk floating around which great, wonderful, fine… accept that’s become an expectation when in reality for so many it’s actually a luxury rarely given opportunity. I don’t have a solution other than to stop, to write down what you need and find the time. Self care isn’t just a bath and glass of wine, it’s getting your heart rate up & drinking enough water, it’s turning off your screens to sit and reflect on your life and identify areas that need more attention. It’s feeding your spirit and drawing closer to Jesus to pull from His grace and peace. It’s saying no when you need to. It’s giving your time and energy to something greater than you because self care isn’t just about us – it’s about becoming the best version of ourselves to pour into others. Of course it should include saunas, coffee, face masks, dancing, hiking & pampering too – YAS queen! So here’s your gentle reminder to prioritize your needs in whatever season you’re in! To be conscious of them & make time for them, you’re worth every ounce of peace they produce. Also, yes I have 3 chins in this picture… what’s it to ya? .

Yeah, I get stuck in (effing, cuz these kinds of ruts deserve a swear word) clothing ruts too. Sometimes I try something new, look at myself in the mirror & OLIVIA!! All the bad thoughts come flooding in like a freight train. Walking out of the house feeling uninspired & self conscious sets a real positive tone for the day, doesn’t it? No thanks! But this is what I’ve come to understand about clothes, they’re just like every other relationship we have. We search for security, comfort, safety, inspiration & identity in them. They help to shape us into who we want to become & what we believe about ourselves. I want my clothing to offer security in areas I might not always feel good about. And all relationships need to be kept in check right?! I mean if home girl is stirring up some trouble you walk away! You (ideally, I know that’s not always easy) set boundaries to protect your heart. Typically we are drawn to people who make us feel inspired, understood, free & alive – people we feel proud to be seen with! Insert your wardrobe here… if you start your every day off feeling depleted, uninspired & self conscious then your relationship needs to change for your own well being. People and clothing should not becoming a hinderance to your potential or your overall health & beliefs about yourself. I am not a stylist just for the glamor (but let’s be real I def drool over the fancy things), I am a stylist because I believe in your potential and that your clothing is a major way of unlocking it! Set a boundary with your clothing like you would with someone who’s stealing your joy, get rid of them. They’re not worth keeping close if all they do is hurt you. ? @kaleighdsimmonsphoto

What happens in the quiet moments in your life? When you press pause on social media, when the tv goes dark and the only sound is your breathe, the only movement is your body in your cozy bed. I find myself in my most vulnerable form in those moments. When I reflect on my life – what I’ve suffered and accomplished, the areas in me I see growth and the areas I ache for freedom. When I let my heart wander through the opportunities I’ve been given to leave a simple reminder of Jesus’ love for someone who needed it & if I’ve been faithful in my calling to be His hands & His feet in this world. I know the quiet moments can be hard for so many people, anxieties sneak up so easy in the dark & quiet – A.W. Tozer said, ‘we need never to shout across the open spaces to an absent God. He is nearer than our own soul, closer than our most secret thought.’ Even further, God doesn’t run when we have a dark thought, struggle or emotion…He simply remains. I crave the quiet, maybe because I’m a mother of 3 and quiet is so rare around here but maybe because instead of fearing the quiet, I’ve learned to embrace the chance to sit & be present with a God who challenges me to grow beyond the limits I’ve set for myself and embrace who He created me to be. (((Be still & know that I am God. Psalm 46:10.)))
